Eddie Peregrina

Edgard Villavicencio Peregrina, known as Eddie Peregrina (November 11, 1944 – April 30, 1977), was a popular Filipino singer and matinee idol in the 1970s. He earned the title “The Original Jukebox King” and was famous for songs like “What Am I Living For,” “Together Again,” “Two Lovely Flowers,” and “Mardy.” Tragically, he passed away at the age of 32, just a month after a car accident on EDSA in Mandaluyong, while he was at the height of his fame.

Biography
Eddie was born on November 11, 1944, to Octavio Peregrina from Pililla, Rizal, and Nena Villavicencio from Cebu. He began singing in local contests as a child and won a competition on DZXL’s “Tita Betty’s Children Show” when he was six. After finishing high school at Villamor in 1963, he became a professional singer, performing with various bands, including the Blinkers Band in Japan. His big break came when he won a singing contest on the popular TV show Tawag ng Tanghalan in the 60s and 70s.

Singing style
Eddie was known for his unique high-pitched voice, which set him apart from other singers of the time, who often had lower, smoother tones like those of Matt Monro and Frank Sinatra. He had a distinctive way of tilting his feet back to reach the highest notes.

Showbiz
Eddie’s popularity soared, especially among the masses. The jukebox, a machine that plays music, became very popular due to the high demand for his songs. His fame grew even more when he became a movie star, acting alongside leading ladies of the 1970s, such as Esperanza Fabon, Vilma Santos, and Nora Aunor. He starred in a TV show called The Eddie-Nora Show on Channel 9 in the 1960s. His films included Mardy and Memories of Our Dreams with Esperanza Fabon, and he co-starred with his wife Lyn Salazar in Batul of Mactan in 1974. He was also the lead in Dito sa Aking Puso (1970) with Nora Aunor.
